My Feathered Friends

Recently I’ve had a lot more time on my hands than normal and it has allowed me to focus on activities I never felt like I had enough time for. My new found hobby is, birdwatching. I spread birdseed on my window sill, grab my “professional” camera, and wait for them to flock over to me. I snap a picture and admire their beauty. I am by no means anywhere close to being a professional photographer, but I give it the old college try.

My window has been visited by Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Brown-Headed Cowbirds, Tufted Titmouse, Cardinals, and so many other species I have yet to identify.

I hear their sweet songs from dawn until dusk. Waking up in the mornings, watching them, listening to them, enjoying their presence; each bird brings with it a sense of peace as a gift to me. I allow my mind to calm itself, from the worries of everyday life, and gladly accept the serenity these feathered-creatures have brought to me.

One bird in particular, a Chipping Sparrow, whom regularly visits my window sill multiple times a day, will very graciously tap its little beak on my window when their food has run out. I have become friends with this little bird. It has become known as Regina. Regina and I have have formed a bond during self-isolation. You can usually find her sitting in my window looking in when she is not busy going about her daily chores. Many a time we have shared a quiet moment looking at each other through the window. Although, I am not sure she can see me, she knows I am there. I make noise as I move about my room, yet she stays. I get down to her level and admire her beautiful feathers. She taps on my window again letting me know it’s time for her next meal and I gladly oblige. She flies away when I open my window to lay out another bountiful feast, but I know she will be back shortly to enjoy the seeds I have “prepared” for her.

A friend of Regina has caught on, and now also knows that if they tap on the window food will magically appear shortly after. I named him Ed. One after the other will fly over, tap on the glass, hop around, tap again, then fly off.  This cycle continues until their request has been fulfilled.

Unfortunately I do not have a good quality picture of Regina. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to capture her beauty with my good camera.

I’ll leave you with this picture of “Ed”.
