The Darkness

A black, thick fog floated across the ground seeking it’s next victim. It crept towards her. Unaware of its presence, she was a perfect target. The Darkness slowly curled around her legs. It happened instantaneously, The Darkness encompassed her entire being. Wrapping itself around her like a straight jacket, tightening its grip. Squeezing her like a Boa before it consumes its prey.

The Darkness is a magnificent creature. Vile in every possible way. The outside mirrors what the victim looked like before it had taken ahold. Inside, a terrifying blackness surrounded her.
This was unlike anything she had ever experienced before. It was claustrophobically dark.
Through the Darkness’s eyes the world looked grim. Sun beams shone down on a vibrant, colorful world, but to her, now a prisoner to the Darkness, everything was lifeless.

The Darkness, when moving about, appears weightless. As if it was a cloud. An illusion put on to trick the mind. She could feel the weight of it. The heaviness making every movement arduous.
The Darkness’s chameleon like qualities allowed her to live her regular daily life without anyone knowing what truly was happening.
When presented with the opportunity she attempted to convince those closest to her of the prison she was in. None really understood, for she looked like her normal self to them. They could not see the burden she carries.

The Darkness infiltrated every part of her. She battled daily with terrible thoughts. Her optimism fighting the Darkness in a mental war that gave no signs of a truce, a surrender, or a victor.

As the days went on the Darkness became thicker and heavier. She would cry, begging the Darkness to show her mercy. For a second of relief. It did not come.
On occasion sleep would find her, but it was not the escape she hoped for. Night terrors interrupted her slumber, jolting her awake. Traumatized by the vivid nightmares, sleep was now something she feared.

The crushing pressure on her chest was unbearable. She could feel her heart breaking under the tension of its tight grip. She screamed and begged for death; for there seemed to be no other escape from this never-ending hell.

As the months wore on she felt herself losing her mind.
The darkness creeps in, takes control of your thoughts and actions. Slowly but surely you lose yourself, your mind, everything.

Hopelessness grows with every passing hour. The Darkness feeds off of desperation.
Every time she pleaded for relief it presented her with only one option. One way out of this purgatory. She contemplated this decision every minute of every day.

Once she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her face looked like hers, but felt as if it belonged to a stranger. She no longer knew this person staring back at her. She was lost. Lost in the Darkness and no one even knew.

“All it takes is a beautiful fake smile to hide an injured soul and they will never notice how broken you really are.” ~ Robin Williams
